Salvia Hispanica it is popularly known as Chia native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala. Chia seeds are small ovals with a diameter of approximately 1 mm. They are mottle-colored with brown, gray, black, and white. Chia seed is composed more of protein, fat, carbohydrates, high dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins, and dry matter. It also contains a high amount of antioxidants. The key feature of chia seed is that it does not contain gluten. It is an ideal choice of diet if one who wishes to maintain a  good health. It has numerous health benefits on our body mainly digestive system .In Ayurveda,  Agni has a major role to maintain one’s  health . Agni is responsible for the metabolic process on our body .If a person’s digestion is proper he may have less chance of getting the disease. Chia seed is a good choice to maintain a balanced serum lipid profile. It is also a great source of dietary fiber which is beneficial for the digestive system. This fiber content is higher than quinoa, flaxseed, and amaranth, even greater compared with other dried products .“The presence of higher extents of fiber help in diabetes mellitus by slowing down the digestion process and release of glucose, it also improves the peristaltic movement of the intestine and reducing plasma cholesterol. The biological value of chia is superior to cereals and higher content of calcium, magnesium, and potassium than milk (De Tucci 2006)”.Since Chia seed is rich in protein content, it helps in reduction of food intake making it a perfect addition to any weight loss diet. Since the chia seed contains more amount of fibers it absorbs more amount of water and expands in the stomach forms a gel like texture and keeps us fuller for longer and reduces intake of calories.


How to consume Chiya seed

The ideal time to consume chia seed is during morning hours that too in empty stomach.

Simple home recipe for making chia drink

one table spoon of chia seeds.

one cup of boiled and cool water.

one table spoon of honey.

lemon juice


Add 1 table spoon of chia seed to one cup water along with one spoon honey and add a pinch of lemon juice. we should wait for 15 to 20 minutes before consuming the drink. When the outer shell of chia seeds come in contact with water they expand and become gel-like substance then it is ready to consume. Chia seeds can be added to many food products. They can be sprinkled on salads, yogurt, oatmeal, bread, puddings, crackers, and soups. Starting the day with chia will give full energy and freshness throughout the day.
