PUNE: The court of judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) Sanjay Sardar convicted and sentenced an ayurveda medical professional, Sanjay V Shitole, to three years in jail for the offence of bigamy. The court also sentenced 38-year-old Shitole to one-year imprisonment for committing cruelty to his first wife, Sunita, who is also an ayurveda doctor.
“Both the sentences are to run concurrently,” assistant public prosecutor Sandhya Kale told TOI on Friday. “The court, while convicting the accused, has suspended the prison sentences to allow the accused to move an appeal in the sessions court,” she said.
Sanjay, who hails from Khadki Ravangaon in Daund taluka near Pune, married Sunita, who is now residing at Bhusari colony in Kothrud, on February 4, 1999. However, some time after their marriage, Sanjay started harassing Sunita physically and mentally, frequently asking her to bring money from her parents and beating her for money to get him liquor.
Sunita had then left him for her maternal place in year 2002, but Sanjay approached and convinced her to return home and even gave her an assurance on a stamp paper that he wouldn’t harass her. The couple then started afresh at a house in Sangvi area under the Chatushringi police area, but Sanjay was once again started harassing Sunita.
In May 2008, Sunita discovered, from pursuing an SMS on Sanjay’s cell phone, that he had married another woman for four months. She then lodged a complaint with the Chatushringi police and the latter investigated the matter and filed a chargesheet against Sanjay in the JMFC court.
Kale said, “The prosecution relied on Sanjay’s sworn affidavit in the past assuring Sunita that he won’t harass her and also the fact that he married for a second time without divorcing his first wife. Also, he subjected Sunita to cruelty.”
On Friday, the court conveyed the operative part of its conviction order and sentence while suspending the term to allow the accused move an appeal.
