VARANASI: Amidst two prominent government hospitals and a busy medicine market, stands aloof a 25-bedded Ayurveda Hospital run by the state government, which may collapse any time due to lack of attention.

The condition of the hospital gets exposed merely on entering its premises. The upper portion of the two-storeyed hospital is totally damaged, the roof of the building remains waterlogged during the rainy season. This condition has been prevailing for past 25 years and no government machinery has taken pains to take stock of it. The leaking roof had made it vulnerable to any human activity on the first floor. The condition of toilets, drinking water facility, furniture and veranda is distressing.

The hospital is still rendering service to patients from the outdoor department at ground floor and has sufficient number of staff as to other hospitals in the districts. No patient is admitted in the hospital.

“We have 14 staff members against the sanctioned post of 15, including two medical officers (one male and one female), pharmacists, chief pharmacists, staff nurse, ward boys and other para medical and fourth grade staff. More than 70 patients arrive every day. These patients may be suffering from chronic as well as common diseases. Since the upper portion, which was meant for admitting the patients is damaged, we cannot admit serious patients. In times of emergency, patients are laid at the bench in the OPD till they are referred to other hospital. We generally refer such patients to faculty of Ayurveda, Sir Sundar Lal (SSL) hospital of BHU,” medical officer GP Mishra said.
