NAGPUR: Students who appeared for the Post Graduate Ayurveda Common Entrance Test (PGACET) allege that the answers of at least 20 questions are either wrong or dubious. The answer keys of different sets of the exam held in the beginning of this month also give different answers to same questions. Students met officials of the state’s Director of Health Services on the issue on Tuesday.
The results for the exam held on August 3 were declared on August 14. The model answer keys to all four sets of questions were also released the same day. Out of 250 questions in the paper, there were discrepancies in the answers to at least 15-20 questions in each key. This has upset the students who now want the evaluation process to be done afresh, with verification of correct answers of the questions in which there is confusion. One compilation of such questions done by students lists 27 questions.
“The scores in this exam are the basis of admission to four government and 11 aided colleges in the state. For the 100 seats of each category, 2300 applicants appear. This means that even a few answers and therefore marks here and there make a lot of difference,” said one of the examinees Chandrashekhar Kawde.
Another student Abhishek Kokode said some answers given in the answer key were factually incorrect. “For example, one question asks about the number of tantrayuktis according to Charak. The answer is 32 but the key says 36. There are other questions where there are two correct answers among the options,” he said.
“We also tried to call the helpline number provided by the directorate. The officials only kept saying the answers are given out in consultation with some experts, refusing to acknowledge any mistake has happened at all,” said Gunjan Pardhi, another test taker. Her classmate Vivek Jingarwar said every mark counted in a competitive exam and when 15 or 20 marks are at stake, it could make a huge difference in many students’ lives.
Teachers said they had heard of such problems but were not too sure of it. “Such a problem has never really happened before. The directorate must ensure the students do not suffer due to their mistake,” said a senior teacher.
