Psoriasis is a chronic noncontagious systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease that afflicts approximately 8 million Americans and an estimated 125 million people worldwide. Its most visible symptom—elevated, itchy red skin plaques covered with thick silvery scales—stems from abnormally fast turnover of skin cells. A person’s genes determine their susceptbility to psoriasis and well as their chances that the disease will progress to psoriatic arthritis, a condition characterized by painful swollen joints and severe fatigue, as well as rashes and scaly skin.
