Regular classes are expected to resume at KMCT Ayurveda Medical College, Mukkom, from Tuesday as the 23-day-long strike by teachers and five-day-long strike by students were called off following talks mediated by George M. Thomas, Thiruvambady MLA, on Monday.
Students Federation of India (SFI) leaders claimed after the talks that the college management had agreed to the demand to reinstate two of the four teachers who were dismissed on April 17.
The teachers’ indefinite strike was launched on April 20, and more teachers had submitted resignation. They had claimed that the management’s disciplinary action followed their attempt to seek fair wages and other statutory benefits. The practical exams of final year students could not be held as some dismissed teachers were part of the exam panel. The students too launched a stir thereafter.
On Monday, it was decided to reschedule the practical exams and reinstate the teachers who had submitted their resignation. A parent-teacher association too will be formed.
