KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) is planning to increase the budget of Ayurveda Research and Medicine to two percent from the existing 0.07 percent.

Speaking at the program organized by National Ayurveda Research and Training Centre (NARTC) on the occasion of its first anniversary, Health Secretary Dr Prabin Mishra said that the ministry is consulting the Ayurveda Department to carry out research works as soon as the amount is increased.

The Ayurvedic medicine and research sector remains largely neglected though there is a huge market in the world for the oldest healing system, said NARTC Chairperson Dr Dhanik Lal Bharkher.

“Our local herbs are being exported in the form of raw materials and the country is again importing the ready-made Ayurvedic medicines as we don´t have enough herbs processing facilities,” he added

The Executive Director of the Centre, Dr Shyam Babu Yadav said that the government also needs to organize training programs for the candidates to be elected to the Constituent Assembly so that they can raise the issue in parliament.

Established on September 24 last year, the Centre has already provided capacity development training to 213 Ayurvedic doctors and emergency service to 1,651 patients.
