We are familiar with the word Vaccination, which means injection of a killed microbe in order to stimulate the immune system against the microbe, thereby preventing disease. They work by stimulating the immune system, the natural disease-fighting system of the body. Inorder to improve immunity, ancient Ayurveda used Swarna Prashana. It is a method of administering gold ash (Swarna Bhasma) in very minute quantities to improve immunity, strength, memory and intelligence in children. The original reference for this technique is mentioned in Kashyapa Samhita.
Mode of administration
Swarna Bhasma (Gold Ash) is mixed with honey and ghee fortified with Madar, Acorus calamus, Bindweed etc. to children orally.
The pediatric dose – From infancy to 5-year-old is 5 mg per day. From 5 – 10 years – 10 mg per day From 10 – 16 years – 15 mg per day.
Now a days swarna bhasma is usually administered with Brahmi Ghrita (Ghee processed with bacopa) since Brahmi is a very good brain tonic and immunity booster.
Practically, 1g of gold ash is mixed with 100mL of Ghee and administered orally along with honey.
Benefits of Swarna prashana
Benefits is elaborated in “Kashyapa Samhita” that was written before 600 BC. Swarna Prashana improves intellect, digestion and metabolism, strength and complexion. It is also known to be auspicious and improves the quality and longevity of life.
Duration
Either it can be given on daily basis, for a month or once in a month in ‘Pushya nakshatra’ up to 16 years of age.
Importance of Pushya Nakshatra in swarna prashana
Pushya Nakshatra day has a very prominence in swarna Prashana.
According to Hindu mythology, the rays radiating on the Pushya nakshatra day doubles the medicinal values present in gold.
There is no known side effects for swarna prashana.
According to classical Ayurveda “By administering Swarna for a month time, child becomes super-intelligent. By administering for up to six months, person becomes Shruta Dhara – can remember whatever she hears.”
